Polio or poliomyelitis is a viral disease that is highly contagious and attacks the nervous system . In the disease condition is getting worse, can cause breathing problems , paralysis , and in some cases, death .
Since its inception in 2014 , WHO (World Health Organization) has declared Indonesia as one of the country free from the disease thanks to extensive polio vaccination program .
Polio Disease Symptoms
Most people with polio do not realize that they themselves are infected because the polio virus initially caused little or even no symptoms at all, and does not make them sick.
Polio patients were divided into three groups, namely non-polio paralysis, paralysis polio and post-polio syndrome.
Non-polio paralysis
Polio paralysis is a type of non-polio causes paralysis. The symptoms are relatively mild. Here is a non-polio symptoms of paralysis that generally lasts between one and ten days.
polio paralysis
- Gag
- weak muscles
- Fever
- meningitis
- feeling tired
- Sore throat
- Headache
- Feet, hands, neck, and back felt stiff and sore
Polio paralysis is the most severe type of polio and can cause paralysis. Polio paralysis can be divided based on the affected part of the body, such as the brain stem, spinal cord, or both.
The early symptoms of polio paralysis is often the same as non-polio paralysis, such as headache and fever. However, usually within a week, the symptoms of polio paralysis will appear, including pain or serious muscle weakness, leg and arm feels limp or weakness, and loss of body reflexes.
Some patients may experience paralysis of polio paralysis very quickly or even in a matter of hours after infection and sometimes paralysis occurs only on one side of the body. Respiratory tract may be blocked or not functioning, thus requiring emergency medical treatment.
Post-polio syndrome
Post-polio syndrome usually afflict people who are on average 30-40 years earlier had suffered from polio. Common symptoms include:
Conditions that Can Cause Polio
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
- Difficulty concentrating or remembering.
- Joints or muscles became weak and sore.
- Depression or easily changeable moods.
- Sleep disorder with difficulty breathing.
- Easily exhausted.
- Body muscle mass decreases.
Polio disease caused by a virus that usually enter through food or water contaminated with feces and polio virus. Just as smallpox, polio only infect humans. In the human body, polio virus infects the throat and intestines. In addition through the dirt, the polio virus can also spread through the droplets that come out when the infected person coughs or sneezes.
Polio immunization or vaccination may minimize the polio virus. Children, pregnant women and people whose immune systems are weak, very susceptible to polio virus in their area if there is no immunization or did not have a sanitation system that is clean and well.
People who have not been vaccinated will have a high risk of contracting polio when do or experience things like this.
Step Diagnosing and Exercise Care Polio
- Live with polio sufferers.
- The immune system is decreased.
- Traveling to areas where polio is still common.
- Has done a tonsillectomy.
The initial diagnosis of polio can be done by asking the symptoms experienced by patients, if given the polio vaccine before or in contact with people with polio, and through physical examination. Examination of a sample of cerebrospinal fluid, feces, mucus or will be undertaken to ensure the diagnosis.
There is no treatment that can cure polio polio if the virus is already infecting someone. But there are several things you can do as a supportive care to prevent complications and make the patient feel more comfortable, such as physical therapy to prevent the loss of muscle function, pain medication, a nutritious diet, adequate rest, and breathing apparatus if necessary.
Disability, deformity of the legs and hips, as well as temporary or permanent paralysis can occur as a result of polio paralysis. Surgery and physical therapy can be done to address deformities in the joints.
Preventing Disease Infected Polio
Polio can be prevented by vaccination can provide immunity against polio for life, especially in children.
Children should be given four doses of inactivated polio vaccine, which is when they were aged 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, and between 1.5-2 years.
Polio vaccine to the virus inactive have the possibility of close to 100 per cent to effectively prevent polio after three injections, and safe for people whose immune systems are weak. Side effects that usually occurs after the injection are pain and redness at the injection point.
Adults should get a series of polio vaccine are those who have never been vaccinated or the vaccination status is unclear.
Doses of polio vaccination in adults are the first two doses at intervals of 1-2 months, and the third dose between 6-12 months after the second dose.
Some people were given the polio vaccine may have allergies. If after the injection has an allergy, see your doctor.
Allergic reactions that may occur and usually appear after a few minutes to a few hours are dizziness, weakness, swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing, pale, husky, urticaria, and pounding heart.
